I was trying on some shorts for a cosplay yesterday.
I don't usually wear shorts. Chub rub is a horrible thing and pantyhose are an expensive and delicate hassle. My thighs are huge, my ass is not shapely, and I've got dimples and cellulite everywhere I've been told it's not supposed to be. I worry about what people think when I wear shorts. I feel overly self-conscious and slide into a pit of body hate that seems to have no bottom. And to avoid that whole terrible journey, I never wear shorts.

But now I want to wear a cosplay with shorts. Short shorts. And as I've learned, I'll always step out of my comfort zone for a cosplay and take whatever knocks come with that along the way.

It's hard to look in the mirror and like what you see when you're constantly shown images of what "beautiful" bodies are supposed to look like and yours is as far away as can be. And you're not interested in changing it.

I think that's the real issue for people - that you won't hate how you look enough to change it. That you aren't invested in outside approval. That you choose not to be ashamed that you don't look the way popular culture dictates you should look. That you look at your body, rub your hanging belly, massage you dimpled thighs, and go "Nah. I'm good." I've been saying "nah, I'm good" for a while now. I'm the oldest I've ever been and the fattest I've ever been and rather than beat myself up for it, I work to appreciate all that I am. I remind myself that changing my body doesn't make me a different or better person. All it does is change my shape...sometimes in ways I didn't want.

I gotta pay attention to how I feel. How I can move. All the things my body is telling me, and it's telling me some messed up shit at the moment...shit like my stress is too high and I've ignored way too much pain for way too long.

And that I need to be softer and more nurturing to myself instead of powering through everything. Cuz I've taken too many hits and my physical and emotional states reflect it. Constantly.
